panchakarma
"Sarve santhu niramaya" (Let the
whole world be disease free and healthy)
The equilibrium of the three DOSHAS(
bodily humors - Vatha,Pitha, and Kapha) , the
balanced existence with periodical transformation of seven Dhathus
(Seven major classification of the body , Rasa -the
final nourishment factor derived from food after the completion of
digestion, Raktha- blood, Mamsa-flesh,
Meda-fat, Asthi -bone, Majja-
bone marrow and Sukra - The semen), normal activity
of the mind which is having three qualities (Sathwa-brightness,
Raja- power of karma and Thamas-
darkness), the normal functioning of digestive fire (Jadaragni),
uninterrupted smooth functioning of five sense organs(Indriyas)
and the perfect functioning of excretory system (Three Malas)
altogether leads to normal functioning and existence of healthy body -
which is constituted by five great elements (Pancha maha
bhoothas -The Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Ether
), the ultimate result is a blissful life.
To fulfill its mission Ayurveda advises two methods; they are recovery
from existing disease and preservation of wellbeing of the healthy
individual.
The climate changes that occur in different seasons (Rithus)
,day, night, the improper use of sense organs , unwholesome food
habits, ageing, body nature(Prakruthy), improper
psychological activities etc. leads to vitiation of above said bodily
constituents as well as mental qualities causing disturbance in its
equilibrium and ultimately result in destruction of health and onset
of disease.
Ayurveda the perfect healing system which is greatly contributing to
mankind for thousands of years has two prime methods to achieve its
goal. They are Sodhana(Purification) and Samana(Pacification).
The Sodhana therapy ensures the proper functioning and equilibrium of
bodily constituents and mind by eliminating the aetiological factors
deposited even from the minutest channels of body called Srothas
and also by nourishing the entire body.
There are five methods for the sodhana or purification of the body.
They are Vamana, Virechana, Vasthi, Rakthamokshana and Nasya.
These methods altogether entitled as "Panchakarma."
Vamana karma is a process by which the Kaphadosha
predominant elements which can be the cause of disease in the upper
one third of the body are being eliminated.
Virechana karma cleans the channels (srotha) by
eliminating the Pithadosha predominant etiological element from the
middle one third of the body.
Vasthi karma is very much proven beneficial to
excrete the vitiated Vathadosha which is having its base in the lower
one third of the body, along with other associated etiological
elements.
Rakthamokshanam, the fourth method ensures
purification of blood and circulatory system.
Nasya karma is prescribed for head and neck, by which
the vitiated factors causes' disease are being eliminated through the
nostrils.
A person is considered eligible for performing Panchakarma only after
that individual has satisfactorily completed the two preliminary
processes, Snehana and Swedana, together called
Poorvakarma.
Snehana is a process of administration of ghee, oil, animal fat or
bone marrow, internally as well as externally, by which the vitiated
bodily constituents adhered in the minute channels of body are being
liquefied
Snehana is followed by the second preliminary process,
Swedana(sweating). Acharya Charaka, the most admired among the masters, scholars and
sages who practiced and researched in Ayurveda has prescribed thirteen
varieties of sweating process. The well known and widely practiced process as like Njavarakkizhi, Pizhichil, Dhara, Sirodhara
Pathrapottalam, Sirovasthi .etc. are different varieties of above
mentioned thirteen swedana processes. Through the dietary regiments (peyadikrama) and other
post panchakarma regulations the body attains a harmony and the
individual feels his own health as a kind of happiness and
liberation. The whole world has recognized and accepted Ayurveda, as an
alternative system of medicine which has its presence as a part of
life of each keralite for many centuries. Pancha karma therapy and its
preliminary process are the backbone of "Kerala Ayurveda". Panchakarma Centre at South Anchery in Thrissur is a
