about ayurdhara
Background
The Federation has been in the field of Minor
Forest Produce (MFP) collection and distribution in Kerala since 1981.
It was felt in the nineties that the next logical step for the
Federation in its quest to achieve the ambitious goals stipulated in
its byelaws would be forward integration from MFP to Ayurvedic
Medicine Manufacturing.
Present
The Federation has much to be proud of with regard
to .
A market for
products was built from zero.. It has succeeded in creating a customer
base of loyal Ayurvedic customers who are impressed by the quality of
medicines. They include medical officers from various Government
Ayurvedic Dispensaries.
presently gives priority to indents from the Government sector.
was one of the first to implement stringent quality control
procedures. It can safely be said that today is having the highest quality of medicines in
the market. This medicine manufacturing unit is a GMP certified
company.
The Future
The future potential for the unit holds even more
promise. It can serve as a model for wealth creation in the SC/ST
sector for the whole of India . It can engage in backward integration
by developing suppliers of raw material from amongst the youth in the
tribal community and generate tremendous employment potential to them.
It can engage in forward integration by expanding into the Ayurvedic
hospital sector, Ayurvedic education sector, Ayurvedic tourism sector,
etc., which are now the privilege of private business houses.
The employment generation potential is tremendous
with a positive cascading effect on the quality of life in scheduled
communities.

Rising to the challenge the Federation commissioned the unit in record
time on 21/05/2000. During the last few years of operation the
federation has been doing much to be proud of with respect to . A market for was built from zero. It has

It can safely be said today that is producing the highest quality medicines in
the market.
This is possible because the Kerala State SC.ST Development
Co-Operative Federation has been awarded the sole rights by the
Government of Kerala to collect non timber forest produce (NTFP} from
the forest of Kerala; and this forms the basis of the project as reflected in its
caption "Forest Wealth for People's health".
Thus 's
products are born better because the raw material that goes into it
has been hand picked by Adivasis (Tribals) fresh from the forests and
made available direct for manufacture of ayurvedic medicines. It is
these products that now reach the common man through the Government
network of dispensaries
The industrial landscape of Kerala is littered galore with the
carcasses of failed public sector unit enterprises. The need for
promoting those rare enterprises working for the welfare of the
proletariat and in our case the welfare of a traditionally downtrodden
community whose up-liftment is a primary task of the society, has been
taken up by the Government of Kerala by providing adequate support to
the Federation and .
There are only two public sector Ayurvedic medicine manfacturing units
in Kerala, As it is a public sector company, protects the public from exploitive price
mechanism, which a consortium of private sector units could have
adapted in the absence of this units. Just as various government
sponsored public distribution systems serve to protect weaker
sections, similarly in the Ayurvedic domain weaker sections too can
avail the benefits of high quality Ayurvedic medicines through this
public distribution system.. These medicines are supplied at
Government approved rates, which are much lower than prices prevailing
in the market. Thus it is imperative that the Government extends all
possible assistance to
unit keeping in mind this function of paramount importance which is serving, i.e., making
available quality medicines to weaker sections of society
In today's dynamic, ever changing environment it is imperative that
any organization keeps tracks with the changes. No longer can any one
afford to rest on past accolades. Thus there is a moral obligation on
the part of the promoters to ensure that no stone be left unturned in
this venture of creating and perpetuating a sustainable public sector
enterprise of real brand value in the traditionally downtrodden SC.ST
area. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this will be in tune
with one of the directive principles of the constitution of our nation
namely the upliftment and integration of SC/ST communities into the
mainstream. This will go no short measure towards dispelling of the
false notion that brands of value cannot be created in theses areas
and can serve as a model for the entire nation.
